Branston church
St Guthlac’s at Branston-by-Belvoir is a Grade II* listed medieval church with its main fabric dating from the 13th to 15th centuries, standing prominently on the edge of the Vale of Belvoir. It retains the appearance of a classic rural ironstone parish church with its tower, spire, aisles and long chancel. The church has served the small farming community for centuries and remains a key historic landmark.
The earliest structural phases include Norman stonework and arches, and local architectural surveys note that the layout and some surviving carved elements point to an earlier Saxon phase on or near the site, making the parish significantly older than the present building. The church was enlarged in the 15th century, and then underwent substantial Victorian restoration between 1895 and 1896 under the notable Gothic Revival architects Thomas Garner and G. F. Bodley, who rebuilt the nave roofs and chancel to preserve its medieval character. Inside are further historic survivals, including the late-11th/12th-century Norman font and a rare 1794 Hugh Russell organ, relocated here in the 1880s and later restored. All these layers together support the introductory summary of a church with Saxon, Norman, medieval, and Victorian heritage.
