Harston church

St Michael & All Angels in Harston is a Grade II* parish church with origins in the 11th–12th century Norman period, positioned proudly above the village. Although the body of the church today reflects mostly 19th-century rebuilding, the plan and surviving stonework show that the structure began as a Norman foundation and developed steadily through the medieval period. The robust 14th-century west tower remains the most visible medieval feature.

Embedded within the church walls are several highly significant Saxon stone fragments, including an early medieval burial stone set into the chancel wall and Anglo-Saxon cross-shaft pieces reused in both the exterior masonry and the porch — powerful evidence of religious activity here well before the Norman conquest. The Georgian period saw major rebuilding in 1822, followed by further reconstruction in 1871 and 1888, when C. Kirk reshaped the nave, chancel, and chapel in the Victorian Gothic style. With its Saxon relics, Norman origins, medieval tower, and 19th-century reconstruction, the church aligns perfectly with your intro: an 11th/12th-century Norman church with Saxon features and later rebuilding.
