Sproxton church
St Bartholomew’s at Sproxton is a Grade II* listed church whose main structure spans the 12th to 15th centuries, forming a rich medieval sequence in ironstone and limestone. It stands just east of the village centre and is surrounded by a historically important churchyard, giving the whole site a strong sense of age.
The church was first developed in the 12th century, with expansions and alterations continuing into the 13th, 14th and 15th centuries. Notably, the tower shows early Norman character with later medieval heightening. Most remarkable, however, are the ancient Saxon/Viking grave relics associated with the site: the churchyard contains a 10th-century Anglo-Scandinavian cross, the only complete example of its type in Leicestershire, and an 11th-century grave slab found locally and preserved within the church. These artefacts show the area was a sacred site long before the present building. Victorian repair campaigns later stabilised the structure and incorporated reused Norman stone carvings. This matches your intro exactly: a 12th–15th-century church with Saxon grave relics and later Victorian work.
